Replacing teeth starts with a plan you can read

Durham Restorative Dental replaces and repairs teeth, from one tooth to a full arch. You get the steps, the visits and the fee in writing before anything begins.

Cases

Start with how many teeth

Most cases fall into one of three groups. This is what each involves, in outline. Your own plan comes after an exam and a scan.

One tooth

A gap where one tooth was, or a tooth that can't be saved. The usual choices are an implant with a crown, a bridge anchored to the teeth on either side, or leaving the gap. Dr. Durham shows you each and what it asks of the teeth beside it. An implant crown usually takes three to five visits over several months, because the bone needs time to heal.

Several teeth

Two or more missing teeth in one area, or a bridge or partial denture that no longer fits. The choices include a few implants carrying a bridge, a fixed bridge from your own teeth, or a removable partial denture. Planning starts with a scan of the bone and your bite. Plan on four to eight visits over several months.

A full arch

All the upper or lower teeth are missing or can't be kept. The choices include a removable denture, a denture that snaps onto a few implants, or a fixed bridge on several implants. It involves surgery, and Dr. Durham goes through the risks with you at the planning visit. Plan on six to ten visits over six to twelve months.

Who plans the work

Dr. Mabel Durham plans each case, then makes the teeth

Dr. Durham completed a three-year residency in prosthodontics at the University of Washington School of Dentistry and is a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics.

Prosthodontics is the part of dentistry that plans and makes replacement teeth. She looks at the whole mouth, writes the plan, and makes the final crown, bridge or denture herself. Dr. Ganguly and Dr. Zeidan, general dentists, look after checkups and repairs.

A case in order

From the first visit to the final teeth

The steps are the same for one tooth or a full arch. Only the number of visits changes.

  • A talk, an exam and a scan

You say what you want. Dr. Durham examines your mouth and takes a 3D scan of your jaw, then tells you what is and isn't possible.

  • The plan, in writing

Each step, who does it, how many visits and what each costs. You take it home and decide, with no pressure in the chair.

  • Surgery and healing

Done with the area numbed, by Dr. Durham or an oral surgeon or periodontist she works with, and you hear who before the day. Then the bone and the implants join over a few months, and you wear a temporary tooth or denture if the plan calls for one.

  • The final teeth, and after

She makes the teeth, checks your bite, and shows you how to clean them. Checkups keep them in order.
